The Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts have their special badges they earn. They are amazing programs for young people. But, one of THE best programs is the one offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a youth, I was blessed to be part of this program which really taught me about being a woman. Well...about being the young woman I knew I should be as I strived to be closer to the Lord.
As years have passed, I have watch my own daughters learn and grow as they follow the program for young women in the church. I was also blessed as an adult to be the president of the Young Women's Association in my ward. I loved it. It was one of the happiest times of my life working with these young girls between the ages of 12 and 18. Such a blessing.
The Young Women motto is “stand for truth and righteousness.” The Young Women logo is a torch surrounded by the Young Women motto. (see above) The torch represents the light of Christ, inviting all to “come unto Christ” (Moroni 10:32). It invites all young women to hold up the light of Christ by keeping His commandments.
When my Abbie was working as an adult with the young women, she had the opportunity to earn her young women's in excellence award right alongside the girls she was leading. I so admire her for doing so. I was impressed that she had the desire to make up for losing the chance when she was a younger woman.
So...I made her this little quilt to show her how I felt about her and her accomplishment. It is paper pieced. I love it. And, of course, I love Abbie.
